The Skinny x Scotland + Venice: Emerging Writers in Venice
In a new partnership between Scotland + Venice and The Skinny, we can now introduce the Emerging Writers in Venice opportunity for selected participants from the Professional Development Programme.
During their time with Shame Parade, Senior Exhibition Associate Lily Lavorato and Exhibition Associates Samuel Riddy, Annabelle Crowner and Bessie Schofield will share ideas and write an article that draws inspiration from their time in Venice, whether an exhibition review, interview or feature. This opportunity allows the cohort to explore their writing practice, work directly through the editorial process and have a platform for cultural journalism to publish on.
Each writer will receive editorial support from The Skinny’s Art Editor Rachel Ashenden. These articles will go live throughout Shame Parade’s run on The Skinny’s online platform.
Lily Lavorato is a Glasgow-based artist who through sculpture and writing, traces sickness through bodies, portals and landscapes often related to Calabria, where her paternal family are rooted.
Samuel Riddy is a contemporary artist and writer based between Glasgow and London. Riddy’s practice interrogates the invasive nature of chronic illness, often working with archival imagery in combination with printmaking. His writing frequently examines paradoxical instances of how institutions mould artistic production.
Bessie Schofield finds her work within a dichotomy of the politically playful. Silly and contemplative; humorous and introspective; it is an entertaining and absurd commentary on the polarised political landscape we live in. Forging printmaking, sculpture, painting and collage, Bessie invites you into a mischievous scene anchored by a haunting sense of social disorder.
Annabelle Crowner is a 3rd year Psychology student at the University of Glasgow. Having grown up on the Isle of Bute, she has a long history with Mount Stuart, working in various roles and building knowledge about the family and the estate over the years. She is a member of the Glasgow University Union debating society, and recently represented Glasgow University at the European University Debating Championships.
