Baked Alaska: New limited edition print by Charlotte Prodger

Today, Cove Park has released a limited edition print by Charlotte Prodger.

Produced by Glasgow Print Studio, Baked Alaska, 2019 is a 15-Colour screenprint on Somerset Satin 300gsm. The Edition of 50 is 47.5 cm — 63cm (paper size).

The release of the edition coincides with the presentation of SaF05 (2019), a major new single-channel video by Charlotte Prodger commissioned by the Scotland + Venice partnership for the 58th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia.

The exhibition in Venice, curated by Linsey Young with Cove Park, continues until 24 November 2019 and runs in parallel with the Scottish Tour of SaF05, visiting seven venues across Scotland’s west coast, Highlands and Islands.

The first 25 editions will sell at the launch price of £500 (unframed, plus VAT). Thereafter, the price of each edition will rise to £600 (unframed, plus VAT).

Commenting, Cove Park’s Associate Director, Alexia Holt said: Charlotte has generously donated this edition to Cove Park and all proceeds from sales will go towards the development of its international artists residency programme in 2020, our 20th anniversary year.”

Charlotte’s very first residency was at Cove Park in 2010 and a second residency in 2018 allowed her to develop her first ideas for SaF05.

Our aim is therefore to ensure other artists can take part in our programme and develop ambitious new work for national and international audiences.

Curator Linsey Young said: “We are delighted to be launching Baked Alaska, a hugely ambitious 15 colour print made by Charlotte at Glasgow Print Studio, the imagery stems directly from the making of SaF05, featuring a diagram of an Assyrian stone relief, different versions of which feature in the film.

“The cutting matt that is visible behind the image also relates to Prodger’s long term interest in grids, screens and spatial systems. Crucially all funds raised go to support the work of Cove Park and all that it does to nurture and support artists.”

About the Artwork

The screenprint Baked Alaska draws upon research material for SaF05. It features an analytical diagram of a 6th Century BC Assyrian stone relief panel, in the process of being cut and collaged by Prodger.

In palace reliefs of this period the distinction between foreground and background appears collapsed and flattened, counter to linear perspective’s illusionary depth.

These spatial systems echo Prodger’s ongoing preoccupation with perspective, framing and time in relation to bodies and landscape.

The title of the work is pulled from autobiographical content in Prodger’s voiceover for SaF05.

The technical sophistication of this screenprint reflects the artist’s concern for materiality and the process of production. It complements a new series of 11 C-type prints by the artist that explore further the visual material encountered while researching for SaF05.
